In a surprising move, the armed Islamic movement Hamas launched an attack on Israel this Saturday, October 7, 2023, resulting in a tragic toll of at least 382 fatalities, with 150 Israelis and 232 Palestinians among the deceased. These data were confirmed by Magen David Adom, the Israeli medical emergency service, and the Palestinian Ministry of Health in the Gaza Strip. Most of the attacks occurred in the southern part of Israel, where thousands of rockets were fired.
In an official statement, the Israeli military forces asserted that "several terrorists managed to infiltrate Israeli territory from the Gaza Strip." The Hamas group, in claiming responsibility for the attack, declared it to be the start of a major operation with the aim of reclaiming the territory.
The conflict between Israel and Palestine, entwining political and religious issues, has endured for several decades, leaving a trail of thousands dead and injured on both sides. Its modern origin dates back to 1947 when the United Nations proposed the creation of two states in Palestine, one Jewish and one Arab, under British mandate. Although the proposal was accepted by Jewish leaders, it was rejected by the Arab side and was never implemented.
